This piece examines the generative AI surge, the path toward superintelligence, and why heavy-handed regulation backfires. Humankind has recently entered the AI era, where raw intelligence is being computed and superintelligence is likely within the next years. Fueled by half a century of dark predictions, and given that utopia is not a favored movie genre, there is a lot of fear, resentment, and uncertainty across the general population and political systems.
It took hundreds of millennia to master fire; only about 150 years to advance from steam to electricity and silicon; just eighty more to machines that learn and think. We turned heat into motion, motion into work, work into electricity, electricity into information. Now we turned electricity into intelligence, and soon, into conscious minds with a dim shadow of superintelligence at the horizon...
